in zoology, a genus of quadrupeds belonging to the order of ferae. There are six fore-teeth in the upper-jaw, and eight in the under-jaw; they have one large dog-tooth, and four smaller ones. There are two species, viz. the caudata, or common mole, with a tail, and five toes on the feet; it is a native of Europe, feeds upon worms, and, by raising the earth, infests gardens and cultivated grounds. This animal has a penis much longer, in proportion to the size of its body, than any other creature. The fur is exceedingly smooth and fine. Though generally believed to be blind, it has a couple of small eyes mostly hid with hair. 2. The afacica has no tail, and but three toes on its feet. It is a native of Siberia.
