TAMARINDUS

Volume 3 · 98 words · 1771 Edition

in botany, a genus of the triandra monogyne clas. The calyx consists of four segments, and the corolla of three petals; the nectarium consists of two short bristles under the filaments; and the pod is pulpy. There is but one species, a native of Egypt, Arabia, &c.

The pod is made up of a double rind, or membrane, between which is a pulpy matter; which taken in the quantity of two or three drams, or an ounce or more, proves gently laxative or purgative; and at the same time, by its acidity, quenches thirst, and allays immoderate heat.
