Volume 1 · 102 words · 1778 Edition

(Dr. Mark), a celebrated physician and poet, born at Newcastle upon Tyne in 1721; where, and at the universities of Edinburgh and Leyden, he was educated. He was afterward admitted by mandamus to the degree of doctor in physic at Cambridge; and was appointed one of the queen's physicians, upon the establishment of her household. He was possessed of a fine luxuriant fancy; which, tho' he wrote many pieces, particularly odes, is principally displayed in that admired poem, The Pleasures of Imagination; which, however, he did not live to finish according to his plan. He died of a putrid fever in 1770.
