BOLOGNE

Volume 3 · 106 words · 1797 Edition

by the English commonly called Bulon, a city of Picardy in France, and capital of the Bolonnois, seated near the sea. It is divided into two towns, the Upper and Lower; the first is strongly fortified, the other is inclosed by walls only. The port is at the mouth of the river Liane, but the water is so shallow that no ships of burden can enter it. It is defended on the side of the river by a mole, which shelters it from the winds, and at the same time prevents the river from filling it with filth. E. Long. 9° 17', N. Lat. 50° 42'.
