an inflammable fossil found in England, France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Ireland, &c. Its colour is brown or brownish black, and of a laminar structure. It is composed of wood, penetrated by petrol or bitumen; and frequently contains pyrites, alum, and vitriol.
