a very strong town of Poland, and capital of Podolia, with two castles and a bishop's see. It was taken by the Turks in 1672, who gave it back in 1690, after the treaty of Carlowitz. It is seated on a craggy rock, in E. Long. 27° 30' N. Lat. 48° 58'.
