NAUCLERUS

Volume 12 · 127 words · 1797 Edition

(John), descended of a noble family of Swabia, was provost of the church of Suringia, and professor of law in the university of that city. His original name was Vergennus; but this name, which in German signifies "sailor," he changed into Naucerus, a word of the same signification in Greek. He was alive in 1501. We have from him a Latin Chronicle from Adam to the year 1500, of which Basilus wrote a continuation down to 1514, and Surius to 1564. It possesses greater accuracy than any historical compilation which had appeared prior to his time; but still it is only a compilation. It is chiefly valued for what regards the occurrences of the 15th century. It was printed at Cologne in folio in 1564 and 1579.
