LAWLESS COURT, a court said to be held annually on the King's Hill at Rochford in Essex, on the Wednesday Lawingen Wednesday morning after Michaelmas day at cock-crowing, where they whisper, and have no candle, nor any pen and ink, but only a coal. Persons who owe suit, or service, and do not appear, forfeit double their rent every hour they are missing.
This fertile attendance, Camden informs us, was imposed on the tenants for conspiring at the like unseasonable hour to raise a commotion. The court belongs to the honour of Raleigh, and to the earl of Warwick; and is called lawks, from its being held at an unlawful hour.
