in our ancient customs, is used for a capital quarrel or enmity, not to be satisfied but with the death of the enemy: and thence usually called deadly feud. Feud, called also feida, and faida, in the original German, signifies guerran, i.e. bellum, "war." Lambert writes it feith, and faith it signifies capitallis inimicitia, or "implacable hatred."

In Scotland, and the north of England, feud is particularly used for a combination of kindred, to revenge the death of any of their blood, against the killer and all his race, or any other great enemy.
