AMADIS, a celebrated French poet in the 16th century. He is esteemed the rival of Ronsard, who was his contemporary and friend. He was secretary and chamber reader in ordinary to Charles IX. and died about 1585. He wrote, 1. Poetical works, two vols. 2. Philosophical discourses to Pasicharis and Rodanthe, with seven academical discourses. 3. A translation of the Iliad of Homer, begun by Hugh Sabel, and finished by Jamyn; with a translation into French verse of the first three books of the Odyssey.
