CIUDAD RODRIGO

Volume 6 · 86 words · 1842 Edition

a city of Spain, in the province of Leon, with 11,000 inhabitants. It is situated on the right bank of the river Agueda, over which is a bridge of ten arches, and which runs to the north-west, and falls into the Duero. It is surrounded with some good pasture-land, but the country around may be generally denominated sterile. It is a place of considerable military importance; but the narratives of its sieges must be sought for among the warlike events of history in the article Spain.
