a city of La Mancha, in the province of New Castile, in Spain, in latitude 39° 7'. It is situated near the Guadiana, and is usually considered as the first city of La Mancha. In its vicinity there are abundant mines of lapis calaminaris, and a manufactory of tin conducted by the government. This city is adorned by several monasteries and a college, and has a poor-house and work-house where wool and esparto are spun; it also has several tanneries and glove manufactories, and a market for asses and mules. The number of its inhabitants is 8400.
