a town of the north rising of Yorkshire, in Rydall division, 278 miles from London, with a good market on Wednesday. It derives its name from its situation at the edge of Blackmoor. The inhabitants amounted in 1801 to 1396, in 1811 to 1673, in 1821 to 1878, and in 1831 to 1802.
