a town of the county of Westmoreland, in the east ward, 265 miles from London. It is situated on the western bank of the river Eden, and consists chiefly of one long street. It has some manufactures of hosiery, but little other trade. The market is held on Tuesday. The inhabitants amounted in 1801 to 1141, in 1811 to 1235, in 1821 to 1312, and in 1831 to 1409.
