a market-town of Wales, in the county of Cardigan and hundred of Isar, 204 miles from London, and situated on the river Rydal. It is said to have been once a large city, the see of a bishop, and called Mauritania. Near to it, on the road to Aberystwith, are the remains of an extensive pile of buildings, which, according to tradition, was the castle of Owen Glendower. It is a corporate town, with a market, which is held on Tuesday. The population amounted in 1801 to 1228, in 1811 to 1373, in 1821 to 1479, and in 1831 to 1634.
