a circle of the Austrian Illyrian government of Laybach, extending over 1530 square miles, containing thirteen cities and towns, and 1833 villages and hamlets, with 29,236 houses, and 160,890 inhabitants, who are, for the most part, of the Wenden or Vandal race, and retain that language, which is a dialect of the Slavonian. The capital is a city of the same name, situated on the river Gurk; it is fortified, and contains 280 houses, with 2050 inhabitants. Near to it are some warm baths, which are resorted to by invalids.
