ARISTOBULUS

Volume 3 · 92 words · 1860 Edition

a Jew of Alexandria, who lived about the middle of the second century. He is remarkable as having, along with Philo, set the example of that mode of interpretation which sought to find a harmony between the pagan mythology and the doctrines of the Hebrew Scriptures. He is said to have forged in the works of profane authors numerous passages tending to prove that they had borrowed from the Bible. This pious fraud deceived many of the Christian fathers and of the heathen writers. Aristobulus wrote pure Greek, unmixed with Hebrew idioms.
