BOBBING

Volume 4 · 122 words · 1860 Edition

among fishermen, a method of catching eels, different from snigging. To bob for eels, a number of large lobs are well scoured, and a twisted silk thread is run through them from end to end with a needle; they are then tied fast with the two ends of the silk thread, that they may hang in so many hanks; after which the whole mass is attached to a strong cord, with a plummet fixed a little above the worms to sink the bait, and the cord is made fast to a strong pole. This apparatus is thrown into muddy water: the eels tug lustily at the bait; the rope is then to be drawn in gently, and the eels are brought ashore.
