Volume 6 · 63 words · 1860 Edition

a very ornamental genus of plants, natives of China and Japan, belonging to the natural order Ternstromiaceae. A great many varieties of this plant are grown in England and Belgium, sometimes in the open air, but more generally in hothouses. Though usually cultivated in pots, they are found to thrive best in open soil in a glass-house artificially heated. See Horticulture, and Botany.
