CAMENÆ, or CAMENAE, also called Carmenæ, Cusmenæ, certain prophetic nymphs connected with the religious worship of ancient Italy; though later traditions represent them as of Arcadian origin. The appellation is derived from carmen a "prophecy." Of these goddesses, the principal was Carmenta or Carmentis, who had a temple and altars at Rome. See Carmentalia. The muses are frequently called Camenæ by the Roman poets.
