(carcer, a prison), in the Roman circus, were cells or stalls in which the chariots and horses were stationed till the signal for starting was given, when the gates, by an ingenious contrivance, were opened simultaneously. In poetical language the carcere were sometimes designated claustra, crypta, fauces, ostia, repagula, &c.
