a burgh of barony in Scotland, stewartery of and 9 miles N.E. of the town of Kirkcudbright. It is a neat and well-built modern town, and is indebted for its prosperity to the advancing agricultural wealth of the vicinity. The weekly corn and cattle markets formerly held at Rhone-house have been transferred to Castle-Douglas. Pop. (1851) 1992.
