a city of Peru, capital of a province of the same name, department of Truxillo. It is pleasantly situated in a valley of the same name, on the eastern side of the Andes, about 9400 feet above the sea, and 80 miles N.N.E. of Truxillo. It has a considerable trade, and extensive manufactures of iron and silver wares. Pop. about 7000, chiefly Indians and Mestizos. It has a number of fine churches and a gymnasium; and in the vicinity are the baths of the Incas. Among its public buildings is the ancient palace of the Incas, where Atahualpa, the last Inca of Peru, was basely murdered by the Spaniards.
