a fortified seaport-town of Norway, capital of a stiff of the same name, on a ford of the Skagerrack, in Lat. 58° S., Long. 8° 4' E. Pop. (1845) 8448. The town, for the most part of wood, is regularly built, and the streets are wide. The cathedral is a fine building of gray stone, and after those of Drontheim and Stavanger it is the finest in Norway. The principal branch of industry is shipbuilding; and a considerable trade is carried on in lobsters and timber. The harbour is one of the best in Norway.
