or Line of Circumvallation, in the art of war, a trench bordered with a parapet composed of the earth dug up from the ditch, and surrounding the camp of a besieging army. It is formed to guard the besiegers against any attempt of an enemy to relieve the place, and it also serves to prevent desertion.
