Cornelius, a celebrated engraver, born at Hoorn in Holland, in 1536. Having learned the first principles of drawing and engraving, he went to Italy, and visited all the places famous for the works of the great masters. At Venice he enjoyed the friendship of Titian. He afterwards settled at Rome, and there died in 1578. According to Basan, he was "the best engraver with the burin or graver only that Holland ever produced. We find in his prints," he adds, "correctness of drawing, and exquisite taste." It is no small honour to this artist, that Agostino Caracci was his scholar, and imitated his style of engraving rather than that of any other master. Cort engraved several prints from Titian, Coreggio, Michel Angelo, and Raffaello. His industry, when we consider the shortness of his life, will appear great, since he produced 151 works, many of them of large size and first-rate excellence.
