a Greek philosopher, born at Soli in Cilicia. He was a fellow-pupil of Polemo in the school of Xenocrates at Athens; and his commentaries on Plato's works made him to be regarded, at least at Rome (Hor. 2, Ep. ii. 4), as one of the most distinguished supporters of the doctrines of the Old Academy. His poems, which are said to have been deposited in the temple of Athena at Soli, have entirely perished, but of his celebrated work On Grief numerous extracts have been preserved in the treatises of Plutarch and Cicero On Consolation.
