Volume 7 · 82 words · 1860 Edition

of Thebes, a celebrated Cynic philosopher, and pupil of Diogenes, flourished about B.C. 328. He is said to have renounced his fortune for a life of philosophic poverty, and to have placed his wealth in the hands of bankers for the benefit of his children if they should be simpletons, and incapable of appreciating the benefits accruing from their father's choice. He was the author of several philosophical epistles and tragedies, but these, along with his biography by Plutarch, are now lost.
