Volume 7 · 67 words · 1860 Edition

an Athenian comic poet, who was born about the end of the 6th century B.C. He is said to have exhibited 21 plays, and gained nine prizes. Along with Eupolis and Aristophanes, he may be regarded as one of the great masters of the old comedy—a species of poetry to which his writings gave a new character and energy. Only the titles of his plays are extant.
