GREAT, a market-town and parish in the county of Essex, on the river Chelmer, 38 miles from London. It is a town of very ancient date, supposed to be the Cassaromagus of the Romans; and here remains of the road to Colchester, constructed by that people, are still visible. Pop. of parish (1851) 3235, chiefly engaged in the manufacture of sacking and coarse cloth. Market-day Saturday. Near it is Little Dunmow, remarkable for the ancient right which a happy couple have to demand a flitch of bacon at the end of a year from their marriage.
