a town in the Prussian province of Saxony, government of Merseburg and circle of Delitzsch, situated on an island in the Mulde, 9 miles N.E. of Leipzig. Pop. (1849) 9754, chiefly engaged in the manufacture of cotton and in calico-printing. It is surrounded by walls, and has an old castle now in ruins. Large quantities of hops are grown in the vicinity.
