a free royal town of Hungary, county of Oedenburg, on the frontiers of Austria, 26 miles S.E. of Vienna. Pop. 3700. The town consists of three principal streets, and is surrounded by walls with two gates. It contains the splendid palace of the prince of Esterházy, built by Prince Paul Palatine of Hungary, in 1683, but altered and enlarged in 1805. The interior is tastefully fitted up, and the banqueting-hall is capable of accommodating 1000 persons. The park is large, rising in terraces, and ornamented with temples and cascades. It has a large orangery, containing 400 orange trees, and conservatories with about 70,000 species of exotic plants. The Franciscan monastery contains the burial vault of the Esterházy family. On the north of the town are extensive zoological gardens.
