a town in the Prussian province of Saxony, government of Merseburg, and circle of Mansfeld, 20 miles W.N.W. of Merseburg. Pop. (1849) 9481. It consists of an old and a new town (the former being surrounded with walls and ditches), besides several suburbs. It has an old castle, and several churches, of which St Andrew's contains the pulpit from which Luther preached; a gymnasium, and two hospitals.
