Volume 10 · 62 words · 1860 Edition

German Franken, a circle of the old German empire, lay between Upper Saxony, Bohemia, Bavaria, Swabia, and the Upper Rhine, and had an area of about 10,400 square miles, with about 1,500,000 inhabitants. It is now almost entirely comprised in Bavaria, and gives name to three circles of that kingdom. The soil of Franconia is reckoned among the most fertile in Germany.
