a town of Holland, province of Friesland, 10 miles W. of Leeuwarden, on the canal between that town and Haarlingen. A university was founded here in 1585, but was converted into an atheumum in 1815. There are several other schools, a public library, and a botanic garden. The chief manufactures are silk and woollen goods, and tiles. Pop. (1850) 5288.
