a town of Bavaria, circle of Isar, on the Isar, 20 miles N.N.E. of Munich. It is a very ancient town, and is said by some to have been founded by the Romans. It was, however, in existence as early as A.D. 444, and was made the seat of a bishop in 724. In 1817 the bishop was transferred to Munich, and raised to an archbishop. Pop. (1845) 5350.
