Volume 10 · 89 words · 1860 Edition

a royal town of Spain, in the province and bishopric of Cuenca. It contains 1831 inhabitants, and is situated in a valley on the bank of the Jucar, which flows from N. to S. The soil around the town is sandy and gravelly, and well adapted for vines and olives, which are very abundant here, but so badly cultivated that the produce is very small. The same may be said of the orchards. Yet saffron, truffles, and some garden stuffs, are produced in abundance. The only manufacture is bass-mattting.
