Volume 10 · 62 words · 1860 Edition

the employment of fumes or vapours for the purpose of purifying infected chambers, articles of apparel, &c. The most efficacious substance for this purpose is chlorine (see Chemistry); next to it the vapour of nitric acid; and lastly that of muriatic acid. The fumes of heated vinegar, of sulphur, and the smoke of exploded gunpowder are of very little value as antilimiics.
