a market-town of England, county of Northumberland, on the left bank of the South Tyne, 34 miles W. of Newcastle, on the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway. It is pleasantly situated, but is irregularly built and poor. The chief manufacture is flax. Market-day, Thursday. Pop. (1851) 1420.
