a pleasantly situated village and watering-place of Scotland, county of Peebles, near the confluence of the Leithen and the Tweed, 6 miles E.S.E. of Peebles. It is much frequented in summer and autumn by visitors from all parts of the country. The publication in 1824 of Scott's novel of St Ronan's Well, of which it was supposed to furnish the scenery and incidents, contributed greatly to bring it into notice. Pop. of parish, 1236.
