JEFFERSON CITY, a town of the United States of North America, capital of the state of Missouri, situate on the right bank of the Missouri River, opposite the mouth of Cedar Creek, 100 miles W. of St Louis, with which it has communication by river and rail. It stands on elevated ground overlooking the river, and commands a beautiful prospect. The principal buildings are the state hall, the governor's house, and the penitentiary. The town though thriving has not made such rapid progress as most of the cities in the Union. Pop. (1853) about 3000.
