a town of Holland, capital of the province of Friesland, on the Ee, and on the great canal uniting the Zuider Zee and the Ems, 32 miles W. of Groningen. It is surrounded by an earthen rampart and ditch, and is intersected by numerous canals, the banks of which, and the ramparts, being planted with trees, and forming agreeable promenades. The town is well built, and is the seat of a large trade. The chief manufactures are linen goods and paper. Among its public buildings are the town-hall, the palace of the Prince of Orange, exchange, house of correction, several handsome churches, and a Jewish synagogue. Pop. (1854) 24,461.
