a decayed market-town and borough of England, county of Somerset, on the Ivel, 28 miles E. by S. of Taunton. It sent two members to Parliament in the reign of Edward I.; and from Charles I. till disfranchised by the Reform Act. An ancient guildhall stands in the High Street, and the parish church is a large cruciform edifice, surmounted by a massive square tower. Leather-dressing and glove-making are the principal trades carried on. Pop. of parish (1851) 1746.
