or Nitra, a town of Hungary, capital of a county of the same name, stands on the River Neutra, about 50 miles E.N.E. of Presburg, and 70 N.W. of Buda. It has a castle, which stands on an eminence, and contains within its precincts a cathedral, an episcopal palace, and a county-hall. Neutra has also a theological seminary, a high school, an inferior school, and a charity school belonging to the order of the Piarists. The inhabitants are chiefly employed in agriculture, but partly also in weaving; and an active trade is carried on in the wines of the adjacent country. Pop. 4490.
