a market-town and parish of England, county of Warwick, on the left bank of the Anker, here crossed by two bridges, 14 miles N.W. of Rugby, and 17 N.E. of Warwick. It is well built, consisting of one main but neat building, in the Gothic style, with a square tower. There are also places of worship for Independents, Wesleyans, Baptists, and Roman Catholics, as well as several schools. The chief manufacture is that of ribbons; but malting and silk-making are also carried on. In the neighbourhood are coal mines and stone quarries; and near the west of the town runs the Coventry Canal. The market-day is Saturday; and three yearly cattle fairs are held. Pop. (1851) 4859.
