an island of Central America, near the western shore of the Lake of Nicaragua, in length about 20 miles, and in breadth 7 or 8. It is of volcanic origin, and contains two conical mountains of granite, thickly covered with forests, and of which one manifests occasionally signs of volcanic action. The other summit is the higher of the two, and its height has been estimated at 6252 feet above The island contains two villages, Ometepe and Muyagalpa; and the entire population is about 1700.
