a town of the Papal States, in the delegation of Ancona, stands in a rich and lively neighbourhood, on a hill on the Musone, 8 miles S.S.W. of Ancona. It is well built, and has a cathedral and other churches, an episcopal palace, and a town-hall, containing a collection of ancient statues and other remains found in the vicinity. This town occupies the site of the ancient Auximus, a place which became a Roman colony in 157 B.C.; after which period it was of considerable importance, especially in the wars of Belisarius, to whom it offered great resistance.
