surnamed Le Bref, or "The Short," was the first king of France of the Carlovingian dynasty, and grandson of the preceding. Having been installed in the hereditary office of "Mayor of the Palace," he deposed Childebert III. in 750, and caused himself to be consecrated king in 752. He died in 768, leaving the crown to his son Charlemagne. (See FRANCE.)
