a town of France, capital of an arrondissement in the department of Jura, on the edge of an extensive plain at the foot of a branch of the Jura Mountains, 18 miles N.E. of Lons-le-Saunier, and 49 N.W. of Geneva. It was formerly walled, and has still the ruins of an old citadel standing on an eminence. The principal streets, four in number, are regular, well-built, and adorned with several fine fountains. There are no remarkable public buildings, but the town-hall, a college, and manufactories of pottery, saltpetre, leather, &c.; as well as dye-houses, saw-mills, and iron-works. Marble and alabaster are quarried in the neighbourhood. Pop. (1856) 5208.
