a fortified town of European Turkey, in Albania, on the N. shore of the Gulf of Arta, 18 miles S.W. of Arta, and 58 S.S.W. of Yanina. It has all the appearance of an oriental town, with its fantastically-carved mosque having a tall slender minaret. The streets are narrow and crooked, and the houses built chiefly of wood. There is a harbour, where some trade is carried on. Timber, tobacco, oil, wool, cotton, &c., are exported; and coffee, sugar, hardware, &c., are imported. Prevesa belonged to the Venetians from 1684 until the fall of that republic in 1797. It was then held by the French for a time, but was afterwards taken by the Turks. About 3 miles from the town are the ruins of the ancient Nicopolis. Pop. about 4000.
